About 180 local Xerox Corp. workers are joining Atos with the French provider of various digital services having closed on its acquisition of Xerox ITO for $966 million.
Those workers will be involved in essentially the same projects and housed in the same offices but will now work for Atos, according to Xerox. The deal will allow Xerox to focus more on core services areas, like business process outsourcing, and let Atos takeover Xerox’s global IT business while handling some of Xerox’s own IT needs.
“It’s a strategic move that allows us to bring greater focus to the businesses where we are well-positioned to deliver greater value to our clients,” Xerox CEO Ursula Burns said in an internal memo to employees.
The deal, first announced in December, is expected to strengthen Atos’ ability to handle massive volumes of digital data in areas such as the cloud, big data, cybersecurity and other types of computing. Atos will get about 9,600 Xerox ITO workers in the deal.
“With the U.S. now our largest market, we have a stronger and more balanced global presence, which combined with our digital skills, allows us to be the trusted partner for our clients’ digital journey anywhere in the world,” Atos Chairman and CEO Thierry Breto, said in a statement.
Xerox’s total employment in the Rochester area stood at 6,575 at the beginning of April, according to the company.
